The core concept of the SALAMANDER project is to develop and integrate embedded sensors and self-healing functionality in Li-ion batteries (LIBs) to enhance their quality, reliability, safety, and lifetime. To achieve this goal, the project focuses on developing batteries with two key functionalities: (1) an embedded self-healing capability to repair chemical, mechanical, and electrical connectivity damage, and (2) an integrated sensing capability that can detect when irreversible damage occurs and, through the Battery Management System (BMS), trigger the self-healing process using an external stimulus. This innovative approach aims to extend battery lifetime, improve performance and safety, reduce maintenance requirements, and support the development of more sustainable and reliable energy storage systems for electric mobility and other demanding applications.
