Less than 30 % of the 25 million tonnes of plastic waste generated by Europeans each year is recycled. Chemical recycling offers a promising solution to reverse this trend by converting plastic waste into high-value products. The EU-funded REPLAXTIC EF-SE project focuses on transforming polycarbonate plastic waste into high-quality electrolytes for batteries, which can be used to power sustainable lithium-ion energy storage systems. It will develop a first class of liquid electrolytes that can also be further polymerised. By combining advanced chemistry expertise with entrepreneurship, the project will equip the fellow with unique skills and increase their attractiveness in the European job market.
