Battery Circular Economy – POLYKEY at the Zirkular Bat+ Workshop

Battery Circular Economy – POLYKEY at the Zirkular Bat+ Workshop
POLYKEY participated in the 2nd Zirkular Bat+ Workshop held in Donostia, organized by Naturklima – Gipuzkoa’s Climate Change Foundation – and Cidetec Energy Storage.
The event brought together national and international experts to discuss challenges and opportunities in the battery circular economy. Our R&D leader in materials for batteries and bioelectronics, Iñaki Gómez, attended presentations and round tables covering digitalization, traceability, reuse, and smart recycling – all key for sustainable innovation in the battery sector.
The workshop showcased technological innovations and business models supporting new resource cycles and the recovery of critical materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel. These initiatives strengthen environmental goals, reduce dependency on imported raw materials, and improve industrial and energy autonomy. A highlight was the creation of an intelligent battery recycling laboratory in Gipuzkoa – a pioneering European facility set to drive innovation in the battery circular economy, generate green jobs, and increase sustainability through material valorization.
Industry leaders such as Circunomics, Metso, TES AMM, FEV Consulting, and Cidetec presented solutions for second-life battery and recycling. This exchange reinforces circular economy strategies as essential for sustainable electric mobility and renewable energy storage.
The event concluded with a round table on European challenges in battery circularity and opportunities for public-private cooperation, advancing the battery circular economy in the region.
POLYKEY’s participation in this workshop reflects our dedication to advancing battery sustainability and the circular economy through our innovative materials.
