ZefInnov: Polykey launches a project for bio-based coatings for wind turbine blades

At Polykey Polymers, we’ve recently launched ZefInnov, a project focused on developing bio-based coatings for wind turbine blades using our polyol synthesis technology. The goal is to create coatings that are durable, circular, and less dependent on fossil resources, helping the wind energy industry move toward a more sustainable future.

Thanks to €1M in funding, ZefInnov allows us to scale production of our coatings, expand our technical and scientific team, and upgrade our facilities by 2027 to meet industrial demand. These resources are crucial to translate our bio-based coatings from the lab to industrial applications. We are collaborating with leading research centers such as BERC-POLYMAT, CIDETEC, Biomagune, AIMPLAS, and the University of the Basque Country, strengthening Gipuzkoa as a hub for innovation and energy transition. Their expertise is essential to optimize the performance, durability, and sustainability of our coatings.

ZefInnov leverages one of our three patented technologies for producing bio-based materials with reduced fossil dependency and adaptable industrial performance. This project is not only about materials — it’s about creating new jobs, boosting local expertise, and contributing to a collaborative innovation ecosystem. By developing bio-based coatings, we aim to support renewable energy growth, improve sustainability in manufacturing, and demonstrate the potential of circular and bio-based materials in real-world industrial applications. The lessons we learn here will also feed into other lines of Polykey’s work, including materials for energy storage and bioelectronics.

For anyone interested in the chemistry behind ZefInnov, you can explore the polyols we use in our coatings here. These polyols form the foundation of our bio-based coatings and highlight how sustainable chemistry can deliver high-performance solutions.
