Plastic Waste Management Forum 2025 – Discussion on Consumerism and Sustainability

The Plastic Waste Management Forum 2025, held in San Sebastian and organized by the UPV/EHU, Universiteit Gent, and Maastricht University, brought together leading researchers, policymakers, and industry representatives to address one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.

Our Scientific Director, Coralie Jehanno, was invited as a young scientist to deliver the introductory talk and moderate discussions on the thought-provoking topic: “How can we face the incompatibility of consumerism with sustainability efforts?”

The debates explored in the Plastic Waste Management Forum were:

  • Which type of legislation could address plastic waste? Banning or limiting? Taxation or incentive policies?
  • What should be considered reasonable and non-reasonable restrictions for sustainable consumption? How the different measures could be accepted by the different cultures and social groups?
  • What are the respective roles of governments, academia, and industry in tackling plastic pollution towards a more circular economy?

This forum provided an important platform for exchanging ideas and shaping future strategies in plastic waste management. We are proud to have contributed to this dialogue and extend our thanks to Haritz Sardon Muguruza, Steven De Meester, and Kim Ragaert for organizing such a valuable event.
