Biosourced Polyesters: Synthesis of Recyclable and Innovative Materials for Packaging Applications

Fancy a swim in… plastic? Scientists warn our oceans could contain more plastics than fish (by weight) by 2050. Currently, around 26 billion tonnes of plastic waste are generated every year in Europe alone, with more than 70% not recycled. Most disposed plastics are non-degradable and cannot be recycled effectively. The EU-funded NATURE project addresses this challenge through an innovative research training programme at the forefront of the circular economy. It focuses on the synthesis of new bio-sourced polyesters, designing polymers for both high performance and recyclability, fostering sustainable materials for the packaging sector while training a new generation of researchers with interdisciplinary skills to advance the transition towards a circular plastics economy.
